The process of reusing discarded objects or material
in such a way as to create a new item of
greater quality and value than the original objects.
While studying fashion design and it’s industry, I was horrified to learn that this industry that I so wanted to be a part of was the 2nd biggest polluting industry in the world with over 25% of chemicals produced world over used in textiles. Sustainability quickly became a study area of passion.
I knew that what ever part of this industry I was involved in would to have to have a low impact on the planet.
The industry is currently sending us the wrong messages, in the name of profit. We have been taught to buy lots of cheap low quality garments that fit the latest look and move on. A large number of our clothes are tossed into landfill every year, a small hole, a loose button or even just boredom and we toss it, with out another thought and to be honest I have been just as guilty of this as anyone else.

We have forgotten about style and curating a wardrobe, not cramming it with things we maybe like but carefully selecting those pieces that make us so happy that they show the world who we are. With all the energy, labor, water and chemicals that go into making these clothes isn’t that just more reason to hold them dearly.

Of course I understand that it isn’t that easy, women in particular have it hard trends move so much over the years. Menswear has only barely changed in over 100 years where the womens wear has drastically changed.

Not only do our bodies fluctuate, so do our personalities and tastes. But if when our clothes don’t work for us anymore we have to find constructive ways of using them again, either by passing them on to someone else or making something new from them.
This is why I upcycle because from the waste of our wardrobes I can create unique garments that I hope someone will fall in love with and speak to the people in their lives with. Because from waste I can create something new and give those clothes a 2nd life.
I love fashion as it can be so empowering, but I feel like we have lost our way and I hope with my little label I can claim some of that empowerment back for my customers!
Cheers,
Lucy
